Looks like
Jay London is gone, and
Charles Martin (
Chuck Marquiss) is back.
Looks like CHUCK MARQUISS was
ReplyDeletetheir old standby when jocks dropped from the list. He was in and out of
the lineup as needed. He didn't mind it as he did it just for fun.
He'd rather do news stuff.
Sadly, Chuck died 5-6 years ago.
Stroke.
very sad to hear about Charles Martin's passing some years back. he was a consummate professional broadcaster whom i deeply respected. Mr. Martin should have been up there pitching radio in the big leagues with that wonderful vocal talent of his which was wholly suited to the ranks of intelligent discourse as a fully competent newscaster.
ReplyDeleteCharles was a hell of a nice guy. He was our regular newsman. When we were short a jock he was our fill-in guy.

regarding Charles Martin's post-KMEN career:
ReplyDeletei seem to recall hearing him do newscasts on Los Angeles radio sometime around the 1980's or 1990's when i was DX'ing A.M. stations up here in Northern California...
to Johnny: could that station i heard Mr. Martin doing the news have been "KFI 640" (it's what comes to mind)???
Yes, Charles did some newscasts at KFI, I heard him several times on the weekends. We didn't keep in touch, but, I knew he passed away quite a few years ago.

thanks, Johnny, for the information... i guess my old hobby of airchecking long-distance AM stations back in the 20th century kept this One up-to-date (as much as possible) on some of our former San Bernardino radio colleagues.
ReplyDeleteHi Guys,
ReplyDeleteChuck Marquiss was my Dad. He passed away in March of 1998 - can't believe it's been over 20 years that he's been gone. :( He had a heart attack caused by undiagnosed COPD.
I have many fond memories of growing up and hearing my dad on the radio. In elementary school, I remember him being on kmen... As a Jr high student in 1989-91, it was VERY cool to have a dad on logo (99.1fm). I remember that he and some of his coworkers came into my class for a demo. In later years he worked at KATY (101.3FM) in Temecula M-F, & at KFI in Santa Ana on Sundays.
Thank you all for your kind words. He was such a hard working man and a wonderful father. I miss him all the time. I just stumbled upon this site tonight... I'd love to see any other memorabilia you have with my dad! I especially wish I had some of his air checks or sound bites.

*kggi 99.1fm... Darn autocorrect

ReplyDeleteI’m a friend of his from Honolulu days and I have air checks and a tape I just had made in a box I found. Contact me and I will share with you and your family
