1959 might not be the first year KFXM put out surveys, but I haven't seen any earlier than March 1959. Here is this week 54 years ago.
Elvis Presley, Everly Brothers, Drifters, Coasters, Eddie Cochran, Ray Charles, Fats Domino all on the survey this week.

Number 6 is by Corporal Elvis Presley.
There's no evidence that Howard Tullis ever wanted to splurge early on following the acquisition of his radio empire from Don Lee Mutual in '57.
Two years would seem about right before Tullis would begin investing some of his stingy cash back into his station properties (KFXM, KDEO, KAFY) once all prior existing contracts with network programs, etc., had expired. That way he would be free and clear to change whatever he pleased for programming, station promotions, and broadcast hardware required for 24/7 disk jockey combo operations.
This may explain why the first Tullis & Hearne radio music surveys did not commence until 1959.

the music. Forever ingrained
in the brain. I remember it
vividly as a great memory.

All the seasons and years are sunny as we're growing up. It's only when you start going to work and/or get married that things can start getting dark at times...
Number 54 "Battle of Kukamonga" is on Youtube.com It's a parody of the "Battle of New Orleans". I guess they used "Kukamonga" as a cute name, no real reference in the song to anything in Cucamonga at the time.
