QUINN looked older than the other guys. Anyone know WHY they hired an older guy at a teen-appealing station?

JIM (QUINN) BAIN WAS HIRED for the morning drive-time show precisely because he was a Number One-rated disk jockey at KWIZ Radio and
his unique mass-appeal translated effectively to the Inland Empire's superlative audience.
age had NOTHING to do with KMEN'S employment selection of this air personality!
NOTE: Jim Bain is still going strong after all these many eons in the broadcasting business doing syndicated satellite radio programming.

THE SUBJECT OF AGEISM (as previously posted by anonymous readers about Charlie Walters and now Jim Quinn)
has, quite fortunately, been relegated to the social junk-heap in the latter part of the American 20th century... and thank goodness!

this One extends kudos to the former staffers of KFXM and KMEN stations who have persevered through the years and continue adding their unique blend of wit, wisdom, humor and intelligent patter to the radio airwaves.
(YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, YES?)

FYI: during the era of broadcasters Walters and Quinn, another "older guy" named Dr. Donald D. Rose (R.I.P.) went on to capture Northern California listeners with his zany on-the-air poobahs over San Francisco's KFRC "The Big 690"... yet another outstanding example where oldsters related superbly to both their teen and adult audiences.

Hey Lord, you are so right 'bout DR. DON ROSE. I can't think of anyone who used the fantasy of radio better than DDR. His drop ins were perfect theater of the mind. His timing was awesome. I STILL believe that DDR was the greatest of them all...but Don Mackinnon and Hal Murray came pretty close! I'm so lucky to have a healthy library of DDR airchecks..nobody did it better!

yes, we up here in Northern California do certainly miss having the good Doctor Rose around to lighten up our day's burdens and help make folks ready to face each day with a smile -- and a piece of that radio theater still percolating in our minds...

but also, we had our fair share of the other notables such as Don MacKinnon, Hal Murray, Johnny Hyde,
and at one time, a small-time up-and-comer, Robert W. Morgan, entertaining several generations of radio listeners with their perfectly tailored personae and show shticks.
really makes one wonder if the ever-increasing hi-technologies eventually sucked the brains and creativity out of most of the broadcasting personalities heard over the airwaves today --
that is, sans all the absolute crudity, debauchery and pandering to the lowest common denominator
that is endemic upon the young turk DJ's of today???

P.S. TO BROTHER BILL EARL:
i still miss Lulu Belle", "Roscoe the Dog" and "Miss Blabby", amongst the various gag characters introduced by Donald D. Rose over the years...
there will NEVER again be another radio air personality of his caliber likely in my lifetime.

One other item on DR. DON. He was the master of drop ins, wild tracks etc. but I remember whe3n KFRC flipped to MAGIC 61 and Dr. Don ash-canned ALL the tracks & drop ins. How did he sound? STILL AWESOME! That showed that it was the man himself who could "do radio right" with or without enhancements! I only wish that DR. DON had "played" here in L.A.

I also wanted to "chime in" on the earlier comments on Jim Quinn and Charlie Walters. I have met both guys (Walters in 1967 and Quinn in 1997) and to the surpise of ANONYMOUS, both guys were in fact NOT that much older than the other guys...they just LOOKED like they were because they were both folically challenged (as I had once been) and THAT will make any guy look older. Pictures can be deceiving!

Uh, you still ARE, Bill.
