What about the history of any DJ women on the air at KFXM or KMEN?
Were there ever any? I listened from the early 60's until the mid 70's and I don't recall any. What the scoop on the inland empire ladies of radio (if any)?
Yes, there was 1 in late
1974 at KFXM.
Birdie Bush.
There was also Lacy Kendall, but I don't know exactly when. Lacy last I heard is on KCAL-FM
Lacy was at K/MEN
So was "Birdie Bush" a real name or more likely a DJ handle. I can kind of guess at the reasons for a female DJ handle like that. Does anyone have any specific insights in how it came about???
Yes, Birdie Bush was her name
before going on KFXM. Birdie was
a nick name for her real name.
Bush was an actual last name.
Al or Tullis & Hearne Wanted a woman on the air.
She had experience in Radio and
Al tried her. I don't know how
long it lasted--a couple of months
maybe. I don't think the guys
at the station were ready for
a lady on the air. It was still
a manly world to be a DJ on a rock AM
station. This is late 1974.
I think Birdie was the sister of former KFXM "Tiger Tot" and future DJ Miles Bush. Both of whom went through the San Bernardino Valley College Telecommunications Department with yours truly.

Yes! Birdie Bush was the first Lady Rock Jock on Tiger Radio 59 KFXM when her brother Miles Bush helped her make the"Air Check Tape" needed to be hired by Al Anthony. She left San Bernardino for St. Louis, MO and then back to do many Voice Overs in LA radio production, married former KFXM morning man "Don Elliot" when he was working at KROQ and she did some radio spots on KIIS-FM. Brother Miles Bush also worked in St. Louis, Mo doing radio and TV production engineering for KXOK, KATZ,KSD-Radio & TV, WIL and KMOX Radio. He moved back to LA to do radio engineering and production at KLAC, KMET and then over to KFWB All News production.
My dad is Chuck Marquiss. :) He passed away in 1998, but I remember him working at KMEN back when I was a little girl... I was thinking about him tonight and decided to Google him & see if anything came up. These pictures made me smile. :) Thanks for posting them...
