KFXM Tiger Radio & K/MEN 129 in Doug's Stuff Room

Small coner of the "Stuff Room"
If you ever wondered how I came up with the name of my site (although nobody has asked) I'm going to tell you. I actually have a stuff room with mostly music related stuff in it. Below a KFXM poster I got when Lyles's Record City closed its doors. My wife is the one who actually named it the stuff room, because I'm supposed to put all my stuff into it. I try, I really do.

More K/MEN/Jimmy Webb

First you see copies of the Wassail Song 45 by Otto's Organization. A stock copy and a promo copy.
An article explaining the origin of the song Up Up and Away. Another front page of a K/mentertainer with a ballon picture.

KFXM Marathon Of Hits

If you've listen to oldies station on a regular basis, you have heard a Top 300, 400, or 500 of all time on holiday weekends such as the 4th of July or Memorial Day. KRTH in LA had a Firecarcker 300 for about 10 years that was based on listeners votes back in the 80s and 90s. Back staring in May of 1962 KFXM asked their listeners to vote on their favorite oldies but goodies by send in a list of their favorite 15. They played them during the 4th of July holiday.
Here's a copy of their current survey, and on the back their Maraathon Of Hits. They had of course 59 of them. I don't know if they played more than 59 during their marathon. I guess 300 would have been overdoing it in 1962.
#1 The Mountains's High-Dick & Dee Dee
What is interesting is that Theme From A Summer Place - Percy Faith was #9, and for the next 20 years has been near the top on most of the Top 300 I've seen.
K/MEN did a Sound-A-Thon of the Top 129 of all time towards the end of 1963, but KFXM beat them by a year and a half.
If anyone knows of an earlier "all time hits" survey, let me know.

K/MEN in the 2000s

About 4-5 years ago, I took some pictures of the K/MEN towers and former K/MEN studios. This was right after the fire that gutted out the building.

I tried to ignore the grafitti on the building, but it's was there.

KFXM Contest...and K/MEN too

As the jingle would go...KFXM CONTEST!...Doing some research on radio contests I come acrss some letters and envelopes that were sent to me. I did win a lot of contests in the late sixties. I am suprised that I don't remember details about these contests.

Didn't claim the prize for the certificate I won. Actually, now I'm glad I still have the certificate. Don't remember what I did to win that contest.

I never did get any cash or prizes for my Flub Club certificates either. Anyone know the story behind those? I don't remember!

It's sad when your memory starts to go!

KFXM Don McCoy

"Dirty" Don McCoy on KFXM from the 1960's through the early 1970s. He went to K/MEN after that, but in advertising and not as a DJ. Best known for his women haters club, and as a magician. He MC'd a dance I went to in early 1970 where he wanted to give a prize out to someone named Fred. Nobody admitted to being Fred. He said to me "You look like a Fred", so I won a copy of Hey There Lonely Girl by Eddie Holman.
Thanks to "Dirty" Don himself for the article, the picture and the wonderful flyers!

KFXM Tiger Mag--one and only picture

In November 1967 I picked up a copy of the KFXM Tiger Mag, and got a surprise. There was a picture on page three and I was in it! I had gone to the halloween event and was watching the band, and ended up in the Tiger Mag. Of course all you see is the back of my head. Here is a posting of the whole tiger Mag with my closeup watching the band.

I did come home that night with a prize. A promotional copy of a Neal Ford and The Fanatics 45 rpm.
A view of myself I never usually saw, bad haircut and all. Below the survey with Bobby Vinton at #!.
