Never heard of Steve Milla.
Looks like he never made it
to the lineup, regular of
weekends. But then the
promo says nothing about him
being a Jock or Mascot or
a whatever.

The survey says "Jay Milla", not Steve. Could it be Jay Miller from 1370 KREL Corona coming over before his stint as Chief Engineer at KEZY 1190 ? Jonny Bruce

Bruce Chandler should know....He was about to leave K/MEN around this time back in '71 and go to KFXM.

ah yes, the 'big changes' coming soon -- October 1971 -- to KMEN radio under the new management of owner Veljon, Inc.
this was a major turning point for the "K/mendous 129" programming format leftover the 1960's era...

Oops, I posted this on the wrong week...so...here we go again...
Jay Milla was HIRED to do afternoons at KFXM and then NEVER SHOWED UP!!! It's a GOOD THING. Had he reported for duty, the opening that I threw my hat in the ring for would NOT have existed!! Al Anthony hired me on a Thursday and that very next day, I gave my notice at K/men. It was then that K/men PD Scott Seagraves told me that I was to be let go, along with some other K/men to make room for a couple new dudes from Omaha, Nebraska (J. Monte Lang and Buddy Scott). Had Jay Milla showed up, I would have been up a creek without a paddle! I stared on KFXM the following MONDAY 2-6pm! Thank You Jay Milla wherever you are!!

PS: Little did Scott Seagraves know that HE'D BE TERMINATED on the same MONDAY that I started at KFXM, so HE was the one up the creek sans paddle!

Buddy Scott took mid days and became the new PD. J. Monte Lang took over mornings. Dusty Morgan was moved to afternoons and Bill McKinney's shift was stretched to 7-Mid I believe.

quite correct, B.C., that was the new line-up for the "Rock of the Inland Empire"'s initial foray into the next ratings book...
>>>side notes:
1) don't think i ever got over hearing about Scooter's firing, but the station owner (Veljon) was explicitly displeased with the results of his tenure at KMEN.
2) Mr. Lang never got the bigger numbers expected for his all-important lead-in morning slot (except for the very YOUNG teens category) which is why Jim Bain (AKA "Quinn The Eskimo") was eventually hired away from KWIZ to provide a counter-point to Dusty Morgan's zany afternoon show.
3) most thankful that ole boy Milla left town suddenly because we never would have gotten the chance to see Bruce Chandler's transition to a very professional broadcasting legend (and i would have missed out on a swell wedding)!

BTW: any truth to the rumour that Mr. Milla was "scared away" from showing up for his gig by "The Dirty One"??? (jest-a-wonderin' is all)

Thanks for the kind words, oh lord Dath...

But Jim Bain (Quinn) had already been and gone in mornings, handn't he? Dave Sebastian took over mornings when Scott Seagraves arrived and J. Monte took over from Dave.

Did Jim go back???

My memory is fuzzy here, since it's been so LONG ago (WTF, where did the time go??)

By the way, over at KFXM when all of this was happening at K/men...

Thom Devine was moved from afternoons to all nights...Bob B. Blue left the premises and Johnny Kaye (now Jhani Kaye at KRTH) was moved from all nights to 6-Mid

And I was put in afternoons...

Lots goin' on at both stations...

Wow. I am the mysterious Jay Milla who "didn't show up" at KFXM. Found this page while looking for the survey that my pic was supposed to be on (I see the pic didn't make it). Actually, it wasn't a "didn't show up" situation. I was excited to get the KFXM job, although it was about the same money as I was making at a station in Charlotte, NC. Mostly, I wanted to work in California. I was 21 and ready to see some of the USA. I was to join KFXM from a radio station in Charlotte, NC. They called my references and I called theirs...a couple of ex-jocks who didn't recommend I go there. But I wanted adventure, so I took off. Unfortunately, I had an automobile accident in rural East Tennessee during the trip. I wasn't hurt, but my car was badly damaged. I called the station, spoke with the PD (I can't recall his name offhand but I don't think it was Al Anthony), told him I'd be a week or so late. Frankly, I didn't like his attitude and the way he talked to me. Maybe he didn't believe I'd had a wreck, maybe his neck was on the line for some reason, but he was arrogant and I was insulted. At some point, I called him back told me that I wouldn't be joining KFXM. I've never held animosity for KFXM, always disappointment that it didn't work out. I went to WKY in Oklahoma City a few weeks later and stayed for several years. I'd be happy to communicate via email - my AOL address is BillMiller2010 followed by the usual.

I see that I bungled a couple of sentences in "The Jay Milla Chronicle." The PD, whoever it was, wanted me to catch a plane and have my car shipped out later, as I recall. When I told him it wasn't an option, the harsh words were next. I thought it over for a few hours. Never being one to tolerate jerks, I later called him back and told him I wouldn't be joining KFXM.

I've always admired Bruce Chandler's air work. I had no idea that I played an indirect role in his excellent career. Maybe we both caught a break that day when he left KMEN. : )

Best Wishes,
Bill "Almost Jay Milla" Miller

Jay undoubtedly was talking to Doug Collins on the phone. Doug was the PD at the time. Al Anthony was the GM.
