KFXM Inquiry to KRSO
I did not realize that I still had this letter (but I should have known, since I don't throw things like this away), that almost 21 years ago I had written to KRSO inquiring about a library of surveys that may have kept from the days of KFXM. The result of the letter was this response.

on your attempt at discerning the ultimate fate of all of the former KFXM's several decades of historical (and now collectible) weekly pop sheets.
this One, too, had experienced changes in both ownership and management at some of the radio stations in my past broadcasting days... personally did this One witness when, the new powers-that-be took charge of a station proper, they USUALLY ended up discarding ALL OF THE PREVIOUS files, etc., right into the ole dumpster! to be later found summarily trashed as "etcetera" included records, tapes, spot cartridges, accounting books, posters, pictures, sales contracts, rate cards, awards and commendations, bound volumes of promotional materials, F.C.C. performance test reports and logs, and even radio hardware then-deemed as no longer useful and/or cost-effective.
therefore, it seems probable, that a great part of the Inland Empire's radio music history went to the City Dump long ago.
SO WHAT EVER DID HAPPEN to frequency 590 KHz -- what station broadcasts on KF's olde position on the AM-radio dial?
last check shows "KTIE - The Talk Of The Inland Empire" with a news-talk programming format.
is this current???
had also heard (although unsubstantiated) that 590-AM went to "South-of-the-Border musica" programming which would be a real shame; but, oh vell, tis the state of things in these Dis-united States...

Why is the address covered up on the envelope and letter?

and now just WHY would "Anonymous" need to know an olde address on anything posted on this blog, huh?
methinks, there is a concept known
by the term "C-O-N-F-I-D-E-N-T-I-A-L-I-T-Y" which common sense should dictate as the norm...
is this not a logical approach???
I read the comments about the blacked out address, I think it is fun to sometimes, on a slow day, drive by (not STOP) at some of the places that were historic to radio in the past. Back then, stations would announce addresses of contest winners on the air. I've put an aircheck in my car player, and sometimes cruised by places mentioned on that aircheck. I guess that someone else likes to do this besides ME. But bothering folks in a private home is not appropriate and I would never do that.
THE ANNOUNCING OVER-THE-AIR of
contestant's names and addresses (and even for local persons reported in newscasts) along with publishing the same in a radio station's fanfare pop sheets was a common practice done in a time of relative publick innocence and mutual civic trust... but those days are gone now; and residential addresses, phone numbers, etc. have all become sancrosat in this era of massive privacy invasions by countless sources.
such drive-bys of someone's home could now carry a negative and frightening implication even upon the best of intentions.
for my Self, i would stick to looky-looing at the historic sites of olde radio station studios proper -- stuff that is publicly accessible and the current norm.
Doug, KFXM didn't save anything in the way of old surveys even in the Tullis & Hearn days....maybe the Top 100 lists of the years gone by, but that was absolutely it. In the mid 70's, there was NOTHING in the way of 60's surveys still at KFXM...
AGAIN, WHAT AN ABYSMAL SHAME
losing ALL of that local broadcasting history for one of the greatest Inland Empire radio stations -- to the trash collector!
thankfully, we now have a great venue for restoring, building and sharing some parts of KF's legacy herein on The Dougmeister's
superb-O blogsite.
