I rememeber at the beginning of the year, I heard that KFXM was going to switch formats, but it was going to be at the beginning of the summer. One day (I assume Feb 1985) I turned it on and it wasn't the same KFXM.
Going through the surveys I have for 1984 (very incomplete) and 1985, these are the last mention of the djs. I would assume one these people was the last on the air, or maybe Al Anthony? If he was still there, which I think he was.
Craig Powers/Lori Gaston 6-10 am, Jeff Kelly 10-3pm, Terry Shea 3-7 pm, Mark Mendoza 7- Midnight (no onelisted for Midnight - 6am) or the last guy could be one of the
Weekenders Gary "Breakdance" Allen, Jerry McKenna, Buddy Irwin, Bob Randall, but probably not Wolfman Jack.
These issues are July 23, 1984 and August 13, 1984
The very last DJ mention I found was Nov 26, 1984 that had a blurb that stated "Craig Powers In The Morning"

Didn't KFXM, as we knew it, end
in 1986?
The timeline is screwed up
somewhere.
interesting, most interesting...
it would be great to learn more about the final days of KFXM's pop radio era if only everyone who reads Doug's blog will contribute whatever they can recall to this board, yes?
BTW: that ole wonderful Wolfman Jack (may he party eternally in Rock 'n' Roll Heaven) was heard
via syndication tape... sorry folks, he was never at KFXM in the wolf-flesh!
I guess it's kind of obvious why nobody is very clear about the date of the demise of KFXM. No one appears to have been listening...
John from Fontana (back then)
Bob Randall works fill-ins here at KDES in Palm Springs. I will ask him if he knows when I see him. Also, Lori Gaston turned into Monica Brooks, Jay Thomas side kick and newscaster on KPWR 105.9. She is now a lawyer. She went from working at the McDonalds in Chino to KPRO 1440 in Riverside and then on to KGGI before KFXM.
It was nationally know game show host Bob Goen who "discovered" Lori Gaston when Bob was PD at KPRO. Actually when he stopped by the McDonalds he asked her for a date. They dated for a while and she got interested in broadcasting. Terry Shea became Jonathan Steel at country KPLM in the early 1990's and then became the mid-day jock here at KDES under his real name Terry Cervantes. He still lives in the Palm Springs area but is out of radio.
Someone needs to call Al Anthony
and get it first hand.
He's in Tennessee.
I'm just saying....
I think Al Anthony was writing
a memoirs book. I heard that
directly from him but haven's
seen any book yet.
I'm just saying....
perhaps in lieu of Al Anthony,
there is John Bunnell (son of
KFXM/KDUO-FM's long-term sales
manager Bob Bunnell) who has an historical website devoted to our common point of interest...
i did some airchecking of KFXM's programming right around Christmas time around 1980 (or 81) when i was down visitng thereabouts... the station sounded pretty good to me at the time if i remember correctly.
John Bunnell has vanished and the site was abandon. Mid 60's KFXM jock Jon Badeaux has taken over operation of the site, but there have been no updates lately.
