Contest Winner

I had an inquiry on how I won the TV set on KFXM. (It was a Toshiba) So here's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
The contest was a call in to name the song and the artist that was played at a certain time of the day, so you had to keep track of songs KFXM played.
They were giving away a TV set, so I decided to try to win. I called when they announced the contest and the caller gave the right answer for the time they had asked, but he was told the answer was wrong. This happened to three or four callers.
For some reason I had noticed that KFXM was announcing the time three minutes later than the time that was on my watch, so I kept dialing, and was put on the air.
I gave the name of the song played three minutes after the time they asked for, which was Thou Shall Not Steal. Then my mind went blank. Who sang that song? The DJ (who I can't remember) said "You know who it is!'" And just in the nick of time, I said Dick & DeeDee. If the station time was correct it would have been "Thou Shall Not Win"
I went to pick up the TV at the station, and it was Doug Collins who presented it to me.

P.S. It died about 1988, so it was good for about 18 years.

This was the first big prize on the radio. I won one other big prize and it was on K/men, and I'll tell you about that at another time.

More Vinyl

Yesterday was Record Vinyl Day and I almost went the whole day without playing any vinyl. So I took a couple minutes and pulled out two 45's at random and played them. Signs-Cashman, Pistilli & West and Patsy-Jack Scott

Vinyl Record Day

I started buying records in 1966. And until 1967 they were 45s. Like a lot of kids that bought 45s and listened to the radio, I picked up the local radio survey and marked what records I had on the survey. (why didn't I use pencil?) This was probably marked a 2-3 months after the date of the survey, because I bought the 3/$1.00 (or .49 each) records at Lyle's Record City. I couldn't afford the new ones. I owned the following 45s at the time this survey was defaced.
Sunny-Bobby Hebb I remember this had a slight warp, but it played just fine.
Hanky Panky-Tommy James & The Shondells The copy I had was on Snap Records. This was the second record I ever bought.
Wild Thing-Troggs My favorite at the time, and I used to play the flip side a lot, it was called From Home
This Door Swings Both Ways-Herman's Hermits I remember regretting spending my money on this 45. It was probably the third record in the 3 for 1.00
Psychotic Reaction-Count Five This group actually made a personal appearance at Lyle's. Another flip side I liked They're Gonna Get You
Guantanamera-Sandpipers I remember a classmate of mine making fun of me because I had this record. Randy S. do you remember that?

The K/men goat made an appearance at the local McDonalds giving away free hamburgers, so I had to go. The goat was accompanied by Buddy Budnik. The thing I remember about the goat is that it was leaving souviners all over the ground, and I had to be careful not to step on them.

Softly As I Leave You-Matt Monro(e)
This song didn't hit the national charts until 1964, and at that time it was by Frank Sinatra, but the Matt Monro version played as an oldie regularly until about 1968 in San Bernardino, I never did hear the Sinatra version on the radio.

If you notice the blurb at the end of the survey August 3, 1962 was the date of the first K/men San Bernardio-Riverside Walk Back and Forth

More winners... and you know what? I think I knew the guy that identified Jose Feliciano. It was Mike Byrum! I don't even remember him as a winner of the contest in 1968. I'm sure I went to elemetary school with him, and at least through the 8th grade.
Anyone out there go to the K/men Bowlathon in 1968?
